For 2017, designers are predicting the return of bold colours, particularly green and blue. So get creative with your favourite feature colours in 2017. Using these colours as part of your decorating or as subtle touches in a more subdued palette will stop them being overwhelming, and might be a particularly good idea if you’re renovating to sell.

Adding some greenery will always work to freshen up a space. Lush, glossy leaves in vases are a cost-effective way to use greenery in your home. Indoor palms, devil’s ivy and the old standby rubber plant are also good solutions for staging.

Marble, another big trend this year, used in finishes or in furniture makes a luxury statement. Pair with brass or copper for a contemporary style statement.

Also popular at the moment is the Scandinavian look – light oak floorboards, cosy throws, texture, with knitted highlight cushions, peaches and soft greys which go really nicely with sisal and flat-weave floor mats.

Buyers are looking for any outdoor entertaining space, especially if there is a roof. Outdoor kitchens, built in barbeques, built in entertainment systems are hot items. If this is not achievable for you – go for a portable barbeque with a few nice pieces of outdoor furniture and a cantilevered umbrella.

Bold bathrooms can make a statement – use unique tile or bold wallpaper/paint paired with fluffy or waffle weave towels in neutral shades to create a spa-like vibe.

Any use of stone and timber-look joinery is very refined and elegant and will attract a buyer. People value the sense of timelessness and permanence these materials suggest.

Blend in the old with the new – this is a trend that resurfaces every so often – so exposed brick and original wooden floors will also be popular.

Sleek, clean designs –a new trend this year is to integrate furniture into the design of a home. This trend is a natural progression of the desire to keep a home open and inviting. By building things like seating and shelves directly into the layout of a room, you can avoid having them freestanding and cluttering up the space.

Industrial influences – handles are back on kitchen cupboards, moving away from the handleless trend of past years. Also in the kitchen, expect to see industrial influences such as large steel appliances and cast iron in 2017.
