Before making a house purchasing decision, one needs to ask the question – Is this the right suburb for me?

In order to answer this question, you first need to understand your particular priorities. Access to shopping? Panoramic views? Close to nature? Proximity to schools? Write a list of what is important in your day to day life, and use this as a checklist when assessing whether a suburb is right for you.

From a lifestyle perspective, there are four main categories of suburb in Australia. If your suburb “wishlist” fits into any of these, then you should be well on your way to refining your search.

If you need access to night life, and to be at the happening hub of the city and all that is available there – choose a suburb close to the CBD, with live music, entertainment, restaurants and coffee shops right at hand.

If you want to live in the CBD but can’t afford it yet – have a look at suburbs close to the city centre that may be a bit more affordable as they are slightly further out, and provide a blend of the attractions of the inner city with some of the more suburban feel of peace and quiet. These properties are also more likely to offer a bit of garden or backyard – appealing if you have pets or small children.

Further away from the city are the family friendly suburbs, offering nearby schools, space at an affordable price. These suburbs are generally close to large shopping hubs and have good transport links.

Out in the countryside is the rural option. If you love nature, fresh air, peace and quiet and wonderful views for a slower, quieter life away from the noise and energy of the city – then this option may be for you. Here you can keep larger animals like horses and ponies, and enjoy the stress free and natural environment, whether it be the bush, sea or countryside.

Whichever choice of suburb you make, take some time to get to know the area before you make a final decision on a house purchase. It is a great idea to visit the area a few times, spend some time in restaurants or coffee shops and talk to the locals. Find out what they enjoy about the area, and what they don’t. Visit the local park and have a picnic there – you may be surprised at what you learn.

At the end of the day, it’s about where you are going to feel at home, comfortable and relaxed.
