A swimming pool in your backyard is something most of us dream of. But if you don’t have a pool already, building one can be a very big project. Whether you are building an in-ground or above-ground pool, time and budgets are top considerations.

Where do you start?

Nobody wants a leaky pool – so getting it right first time is important. Before you get started, it’s important to remember that you will need to employ a draftsman and engineer somewhere in the process – either directly or via your pool professional. If you use a builder, you will also need to make sure you’ve organised a Development Application, a Construction Certification and the water board approval.

So now you’ve sorted the admin and legalities, it’s time to consider the type of pool you are wanting to install. In-ground pools require large and heavy equipment – and you will also have to figure out what to do with the excavated soil. In-ground pool installations are definitely not a one-person DIY weekend job!

But what if you are interested in an above-ground pool? These are also a full construction project – you will need to make sure your foundations are strong enough for the water weight of your pool, remove any dangerous objects and install the piping.

After your pool is installed, there are a few last steps before you enjoy the luxury of an afternoon swim!

Coping – or the pavers and tiles that are laid around the top edge of the pool – can be used to finish off your pool. There is also landscaping, decking and plants that can be used to finish off your backyard.
