As we get into cooler temperatures, are you starting to take out your winter blankets and gear up for winter?

The trick is to aim for a simple yet elegant interiors and then layer it up with items that will give off a warm and cosy feel. Focus on a pared back approach with a simple palette and use art, cushions, throws and flowers to add colour and warmth to the space.

Use warm colours and materials. Earthy hues and terracotta tiles with a matte finish and used as feature walls in bathrooms or cladding on fireplaces are on trend. Mellow, warm neutral colours are absolutely on trend for this autumn/winter. Add midnight blue, indigo and ink colours, or mix it up with forest greens, burnt oranges/tangerines, deep plums, golds and browns or even reds in accent colours.

Cork is making a comeback! Cork is a natural material that will add warmth and also absorb noise – great for open plan living spaces. A wall clad in cork in a home office would make a statement while also being a functional aide as a noteboard.

The trend is strongly towards natural fibres and colours. Choose natural colours such as shades of green – use it as a paint colour in a bedroom where a dark forest green will complement tan leathers, furs, brass lamps and natural linen. Using shades of green in a feature armchair or in cushions and other décor items as an accent will add depth and bring in colour from the outdoors.

Cosy textures – again pointing back to natural fibres such as linen, timber and wool to add warmth. Upholstered bedheads are set to replace the timber bedframes currently on the market. In the kitchen and bathrooms, marble will give way to raw earthy textures like timber.

Warm textiles are a must to use to accessorise your living spaces. A delicate wool throw, or a woven blanket, a tweed cushion are all options that will add richness, depth and texture to a room. You could also opt for a woven wall hanging, or a textured wallpaper.

Autumn and winter are great times to replace your light, breezy curtains with something more substantial to keep the warmth in and create a cosy, snug vibe.

Use well chosen pieces of art to inject colour, vibrancy and warmth into your home. Keeping your furniture simple and classic will allow you to create a space where artwork can be the hero feature in the room. Mix and match artwork shapes, sizes and frames for a layered effect.

Decorating the autumn/winter home is all about creating a safe, serene, warm and cosy space to which you will love to come home.
