There are some moving costs you cannot avoid. You need to hire the right vehicle, you should have the best packaging materials, you might need some professional help given the quantum of stuff you have and you will probably have to bear some unforeseen expenditure in the process. The unavoidable costs cannot be helped. You take your time to find the best mover and packer, try to cut costs of packing and even find some rather smart ways to save money. Even before you plan to move, you can use some of these tips to keep the costs down.
- De-clutter your home and get rid of anything and everything that you don’t need. It could be clothes, old appliances, useless items that are lying in some closet, books you would never read, old discs that you would never use again, utensils or crockery that you don’t see yourself using in the future and even equipment that have outlived their utility. Every home and every family has at least a few kilos of worthless stuff. Consider donating to local charities and helping others in need.
- Consider moving yourself if you can. If you need a mover to drive the truck or van and to load and offload the stuffs, then consider packaging yourself. That will save you some money. You could very well do everything without hiring any mover if you have the time, help and if you are willing to put in the effort.
- Consider moving on a day that is the least busy, for you and for the movers. Try moving on weekdays and during the off-peak hours. Do not get into rush hour traffic and don’t move on weekends as others would be vying for the same day. You will get better quotes for weekdays. Have a chat with your moving company on what they would recommend.
