How Can You Help Your Children Cope With a Big Move

While exciting, big moves can be stressful – especially for children. Adapting to a new environment and not fully understanding the process can cause confusion and anxiety in your children – but there are some things that you as a parent can do to help make the transition smoother.

Communication is key

It’s important to talk to your children about the move and prepare them well in advance – it takes them slightly longer to adapt. Once a child understands more about the move and why, they will be more likely to absorb the reality of the move.

Involve them in the decisions

Where possible remember to involve your children in on the decision-making process – this will help them feel more a part of what’s going on. Decisions such as where they’d like to place their bed or toys in their new room or having them choose a new colour to paint the walls.

Get the children’s rooms set up as quickly as possible

This should really be a priority when moving – before you do anything else. This will provide them with a place of refuge in the chaos of the rest of the house and move, helping them to feel settled sooner.
