Guidance reviewed 3 October 2026.

Cooling starts with managing heat entering the home and protecting people during hot weather.

Use shade and airflow appropriately

Close suitable blinds during strong sun and ventilate when outside conditions are cooler and safe. Fans move air and can improve personal comfort; they do not refrigerate a room. Keep electrical equipment away from water and follow manufacturer instructions.

Prepare for extreme heat

Follow NSW Health advice, check forecasts and plan access to a cooler place if needed. Keep in contact with people who may be more vulnerable. Heating, cooling or fixed ventilation changes need appropriate professional work. Do not assume a simple household trick is enough during dangerous heat.
