Small maintenance issues can create avoidable hazards at home. Walk through the property regularly and record anything that needs attention, especially where children, older people or pets use the space.
Clear walking routes
Remove loose clutter, secure rugs appropriately and address damaged steps, poor lighting and leaks that leave surfaces slippery. Arrange suitable help for a repair rather than improvising a temporary fix that creates another obstacle.
Heat, appliances and alarms
Keep combustible items away from heat sources, follow appliance instructions and stop using damaged electrical equipment. Electrical repairs should be carried out by appropriately licensed trades. Ensure smoke alarms work and follow the requirements applying to your property.
Store items safely
Keep medicines, chemicals and sharp tools out of children’s reach, using their original labelled containers where applicable. Check that large furniture is secured as the manufacturer recommends.
In a rental, promptly report safety and repair concerns to the landlord or agent and use the appropriate urgent-repair process.
