Improving Home Lighting Safely

Guidance reviewed 3 October 2026.

Lighting should support the way a room is used, while controlling glare, running costs and safety. A stylish fitting alone does not establish an energy saving.

Plan useful light

Combine task lighting with suitable general and accent light. Check glare at desks and benches, safe cable routes and whether a portable lamp is stable. Match bulbs to compatible fittings rather than assuming every LED can be used in every fixture.

Assess daylight and comfort

Windows and skylights can add light, but their orientation, shading, glazing and design also affect heat gain and loss. A skylight is not automatically heat-neutral. Check planning, roof and strata requirements before changing the building.

Use qualified installation and realistic estimates

Regulated electrical work needs appropriately licensed people. Compare the power, hours of use and tariff for the actual lights being replaced. Switch off unnecessary lights and do not promise a fixed household saving or sale-price uplift from a lighting change.
