An indoor-outdoor space should be comfortable and usable in changing weather, not simply look seamless in a photograph.

Design for how you will use it

Consider shade, furniture, lighting, insects and storage. Similar colours or materials can visually connect areas, but indoor finishes may not be suitable outside. Choose surfaces for their intended conditions and maintenance needs.

Protect the building performance

Level thresholds, new doors and skylights need careful attention to drainage, weatherproofing and structural requirements. Do not remove barriers or change floor levels without appropriate advice. Obtain planning, strata or landlord approvals where required, and use qualified trades for regulated work. A connected layout should not introduce water ingress or compromise safety.
