A small, well-chosen garden can be easier to establish than an ambitious design requiring constant attention.
Choose for the site
Observe sunlight, drainage and available space before buying plants. Start with a manageable number suited to those conditions, and ask a nursery about their mature size. Check suitability around children and pets rather than assuming all ornamental plants are harmless.
Build a repeatable routine
Water according to the plant and weather, watch for drainage problems and maintain soil cover. Follow product instructions when using fertiliser or treatments. In a rental, obtain consent for permanent landscaping; in strata, check responsibilities for shared areas. Gardening is a gradual process, and some experimentation is normal.
