Installing a pool involves more than choosing a shape and arranging excavation. Work through the site, approval and safety requirements before signing a construction contract.
Confirm the approval pathway
A pool may qualify for complying development if it meets the applicable standards; other proposals need a different approval process. Ask the council or certifier what applies to your site. Do not assume every pool requires the same development application and construction paperwork.
Plan the whole project
Check access for equipment, services, drainage and the proposed location. Get a written scope covering the pool, associated work and site restoration. Allow for engineering or other specialist advice where required, and budget for ongoing upkeep.
Include safety from the beginning
NSW pool obligations include registration, compliant barriers and CPR signage. Above-ground and portable pools can also be covered by the rules. Check the requirements for the particular installation before filling or using it.
Check completion and maintenance
Confirm required inspections and certificates with the certifier or council. Keep the installation records and operating instructions. Maintain the barrier and gate, and supervise children; a completed building project does not end the safety responsibilities.
