Before starting a home repair, check whether the task needs a qualified tradesperson. Familiarity with DIY does not establish that regulated work is safe or lawful for you to carry out.
Use the right tradesperson
NSW electrical wiring work requires the relevant licence or certificate. Plumbing, draining and gasfitting work also have credential requirements regardless of the price of the job. Check the category and use an appropriately qualified person rather than relying on a general list of DIY exemptions.
Check before disturbing materials
If you suspect asbestos, stop and obtain professional advice before drilling, cutting or removing material. Identification and safe handling need proper assessment. Do not use appearance alone to decide that an older surface is safe.
Plan excavation and difficult access
Before digging or working in awkward areas, establish what services and hazards are present. Seek professional help where the work involves underground services, structural issues or access you cannot safely manage.
Follow the rental repair process
Tenants should report repairs to the landlord or agent promptly. NSW has a conditional process for arranging urgent repairs when the landlord or agent cannot be contacted. Check that process before authorising work; doing a repair does not automatically terminate a lease.
