A warning sign is a reason for further enquiry, not always an automatic reason to reject a property.

Ask for context

A long listing period, nearby construction or an older design can have several explanations. Compare price, condition, local supply and the proposed work. Review current records rather than assuming code changes make every older home unsuitable.

Use independent checks

Get contract advice and appropriate building, pest or strata reports. Examine hazards, approvals, easements and likely costs. A specialist can identify whether further investigation is needed. Decide after understanding the issue and whether it fits your risk tolerance, rather than relying on a blanket rule.
